My "art/therapy" career began in the seventies along with my computer career. I was mother of three, full-time employee, and college student. Life was a bit challenging. I was introduced to china painting by a college professor who taught classes in her home part time. Later, I bought a kiln and migrated into ceramics.
After many years in studying ceramics, I opened a shop in the Myrtle Beach area. Two hurricanes and a change in business logistics forced the decision to abandon this idea. All was not in vain.
I had several students who were members of the Coastal Carolinas Decorative Painters. The president had asked me to give a presentation at one of their meetings. I agreed to attend a meeting and then give them a decision. I was hooked.
We made the cutest little box and everyone was so friendly!
All of a sudden, I remembered all the art classes I had taken during and after college…oil painting, watercolor, color theory, drawing. It was then I realized I had been incorporating these ideas into my ceramics business. That was why customers saw a difference it my teaching methods.
Now to the credentials…. I am certified with all the major ceramic color product manufacturers, as well as many of the smaller ones. I studied art in college while receiving a BS degree in Information Systems and Psychology. The psychology has helped me to work with students. I love teaching!
Decorative Painting… Along with Mary’s certification , I have studied with Priscilla Hauser, Sandy Aubuchon, Donna Dewberry, Jill MacFarlane, Ginger Edwards, Patti DeRenzo, Phillip Myers and others. I love decorative painting!!! I am also a Helping Artist with DecoArt.
I have taught for Coastal Carolinas Decorative Painters, Tar Heel Tolers, mini-seminars with my church group, private lessons in my studio and am now teaching regular classes there as well. I have demonstrated for several companies, the latest for Binney and Smith at Michael’s grand opening.
I love the pen and ink with oil rouging techniques. It is a much more relaxed and enjoyable technique than many other technical studies.
I can be reached evenings at my home since I still work as a software engineer also.
