As far back as I can remember, I have always done artwork. As a child, it was school watercolor sets and paint by number kits. About 18 years ago, I took my first tole painting class. I was hooked immediately! I painted every chance I could, mostly very late at night after my 2 children had gone to bed. All my work was in acrylics and done on wood pieces. I started teaching decorative painting about 15 years ago. I held classes in my home studio and also taught in a local craft store for about 10 years. I love teaching painting. I get a genuine satisfaction from it and I especially enjoy the people who attend my classes. Some have painted with me for so long, they are more friends than students. That is a real bonus for me.
About 3 years ago, my local decorative painting chapter had Mary Owens give a weekend seminar. This was my first exposure to oil rouging. I painted 2 pieces that weekend and loved the technique immediately. That weekend, I purchased brushes and a projector, with all good intentions. Well, like so many of you, my projector sat unopened for over a year. Being away from Mary’s guidance, I was very intimidated. When I heard that Mary was scheduled to teach in a shop in Pennsylvania, I signed up for a 2-day seminar. That was when I got my confidence and became very comfortable with the technique. From that point, I was off and running with oil rouging!
During October of 2003, I earned my Certified Mary Owens Teacher certification. I am a 7th grade math teacher, but I look forward to travel teaching when I’m off for the summers. After retirement in a few years, I look forward to travel teaching throughout the year. It’s a wonderful opportunity for me to meet more painters. I have found painters to be the friendliest people!
