Unlike many people who are in the decorative painting & art worlds, I have no formal art training or “natural” talent. The most I did when I was a child was colour pictures and my greatest wish was to have a box of 64 Crayola crayons.
After working in the administrative jobs for several years, in 1980 I decided to open my first Merle Norman Cosmetic studio. During the next 15 years, I enjoyed giving makeup lessons and doing colour analysis with my clients. I especially enjoyed seeing what new eye shadow colours would be coming out each season. During a makeup lesson, we would colour the eye shadow pattern on a face chart for the clients to take home for reference. I frequently told my clients that the reason I got into Merle Norman was so that I could “colour”. We would laugh & continue on with the lesson. This is where I first learned to “pat, blend and no makeup lines”.
When I sold my two Merle Norman Studios, I was too young to retire. So, in 1999 my husband and I opened another business called Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut. Once again I was able to use my colour training to co-ordinate ribbon, flowers and paper in the presentation of our chocolate products and gifts. Since this was a very labor intensive business, I decided to stop by one of our local craft stores to see if there was anything I might be able to do to relax and take my mind off of business. My first attempt at painting was to paint stepping stones. Then I tried some acrylic and pen & ink cards and moved up to some folk art painting. I came away from these classes with not only a completed project but sore neck & shoulder muscles as well.
In 2004 I wanted a little get away for myself so I attended my first Coast to Coast painting convention in Calgary. I took two card classes with pen & ink and watercolor, but I also took my first class with Mary. Wow!! Was I ever surprised with that picture. I loved the fact that everything was correctable! As our business grew, I had less free time and energy to pursue any further classes and it wasn’t until I sold my business in the fall of 2007 that I took more of Mary’s classes in Leduc, Alberta. I attended my initial week of training with Mary in March 2008 and in August 2008 Mary came to Regina where I received my Certification. I’m still surprised each time I complete a new project how good it looks. I receive the most enjoyment teaching this fun, relaxing and totally correctable art form to a new student who thought, “I could never do that”. Thank you Mary for your gracious gift!
Please call or email me for information on upcoming classes.
