In
my former life I was a teacher/librarian and English teacher.
After twenty-two years of teaching, I traded in my card
catalogues for travel brochures, followed my husband into retirement
and set out with intentions to journey the world. He succumbed to cancer the following year leaving me at the
path not taken. I
stepped into a life of volunteer activities and decided to follow an
interest in rosemaling- the art of my Scandinavian heritage.
What a journey that turned out to be!
I had no experience with painting.
I didn’t even know the proper way to hold a brush. It
seemed that I managed to get as much paint on myself as on my piece
of art. With no
rosemaling teachers in the area, I decided that tole painting would
teach me the fundamentals and I could do the rest myself.
The tole studio I chose had a broad range of classes which
including fine art and drawing.
I tried everything. I
even learned rosemaling.
All this led me to the Calgary convention.
I saw Mary’s work and loved it, but not having a clue what
“rouging” was I did not dare sign up for a class.
I stopped at her booth to have a chat and discovered that I
could easily manage the techniques.
Since then I have done seminars with her in White Rock and
did the certification in Calgary in April, 2002.
I have just had the wonderful experience of assisting her at
certification in White Rock.
I love the fact that my students are enjoying instant
success with both Mary’s and my own patterns.
She has been a model of enthusiasm and generosity as she
shares everything she knows to guide her CMOT’s.
I hope that I can pass this on to my students as they enjoy
their own success.
I am still finding it hard to believe that I am being paid to
do something that I enjoy so much! I
am teaching in two locations in Maple Ridge :My home studio (604
463-5749) and at Kanaka Creek Tole Studio (604467-2383/www.kanakacreektole.com)
and also at Cactus Station in Cloverdale (604 574-1232).
Call me. I’d
love to open up a new world of painting for you.
